Skin Biopsy

We perform skin biopsy to diagnose certain neurological conditions such as small fiber neuropathy. It is similar to a punch biopsy procedure where a sample of skin is taken and then sent to an outpatient laboratory.

Genetic Testing

The genetic testing performed at our office is a buccal (cheek) swab, this is collected in the office and then sent out. This test can be used to identify changes in genes, chromosomes, or proteins. The results of a genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic neurological conditions or help determine a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic neurological disorder.

VNS Adjustment

VNS Therapy (also called vagus nerve stimulation) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an additional therapy for adults and children that are at least 4 years+. IT has been proven to treat different types of seizures that haven’t responded to medications- this is called drug-resistant epilepsy or refractory epilepsy. The stimulation can also be adjusted so most people don’t even know it’s there. Some people do better with different on and off settings. A magnet can be used to trigger additional stimulation during a seizure.

Shunt Adjustment

A shunt is a hollow tube that is surgically placed in the brain. This helps to drain cerebrospinal fluid and redirect it so that it can be reabsorbed. This can address pressure on the brain caused by hydrocephalus and relieve its symptoms, including gait difficulty, mild dementia or memory issues and lack of bladder control. Generally, a higher shunt setting means less fluid is being drained, while a lower setting means more fluid is being drained. If your shunt is reprogrammable, your shunt valve settings can be changed by your physician with the help of a programming device. Notify your physician if you experience: headache, persistent nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, weakness, seizures, slurred speech or worsening gait and balance.
